Both sides agreed to consult with their respective governments before signing it, particularly since Maldives was in the process of drafting a new maritime law. The negotiations concluded with the British providing a draft agreement with agreed terms, attaching a list of delimiting coordinates. ![]() It looked like the disagreement could be easily resolved back in 1992, when representatives from Maldives and the United Kingdom agreed to delimit their overlapping EEZs on the basis of equidistance from mutually agreed baselines. However, Maldives’ inconsistent approach to the dispute over the last 30 years has done it no favours. For the owners of the Chagos ( either the United Kingdom or Mauritius), the issue is over who has the power to negotiate its maritime boundaries. Maldives argued that Chagos was a unique case because it does not possess a population dependent on fishing, or indeed any permanent population at all.įor Maldives it’s mostly about access to fish – a matter of considerable importance due to the country’s heavy reliance on tuna for food and exports. ![]() ![]() ![]() Given the many adverse impacts on physical and psychological health and well-being it has on its victim-survivors, exploring this form of online gender-sexual abuse and violation becomes an important endeavor. The vast majority of these are committed by men against women. These forms of abuse refer to the online, and also at times offline, non-consensual distribution or sharing of explicit images or videos of someone else by ex-partners, partners, others, or hackers seeking revenge, entertainment, or peer group status. New information and communication technologies (ICTs) provide many open-ended and undefined possibilities for image-based sexual abuse (IBSA), such as ‘revenge pornography’, ‘upskirting’, deepfake pornography, sexual spycamming, and cyberflashing, to name just a few. Image-based sexual abuse describes the offline or online non-consensual sharing of real or fake images or videos with (un)known others of a person that are either sexually explicit or sexually suggestive. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you’re confused, don’t worry, because I was baffled the first time I read “Wonderland.” I first picked it up in the midst of a yearlong Murakami binge and was immediately thrown by the book’s density in comparison to his other works. The other, “The End of the World,” is narrated by a newcomer to a dreamlike, utopian/dystopian city similar to the setting of Lois Lowry’s “The Giver.” During the novel, it’s revealed that “The End of the World” is actually a version of the Calcutec’s subconscious, implanted into his mind by a rogue scientist. The first, “Hard-Boiled Wonderland,” is narrated by a solitary human data-encryptor-only referenced as “the Calcutec,” the name of this profession-who faces the aforementioned doomsday dilemma and recounts the events of his last conscious days. The book consists of two narratives presented in alternating chapters. ![]() ![]() The delightfully convoluted plot of “Wonderland” is tough describe in few words, but here’s the basic premise. And then do some serious reassessing of your priorities. How do you spend them? If you answered, “Eat Italian food, have sex, and listen to Bob Dylan,” pick up a copy of Haruki Murakami’s 1985 novel “Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World” and read it immediately. You have 48 hours before you’re going to lose your conscious mind and permanently retreat into a world constructed within your subconscious. ![]() ![]() ![]() Individual poems veer from the intensely political to intimate odes to current friends and to people who have passed through and sometimes out of Smith's life without ever seeming janky or as if they are trying to do too much in a small space. (Notably, there is a lot of verbification in this, which is something that generally bugs me, but Smith convinces me here that it has a purpose, and that verbification can be better than respecting the rules of grammar and usage.) The musicality and the word choice are consistently immaculate while framing the slang and profanity and truth. The structure of these poems is odd, subversive in both their untraditional beauty and their rejection of conventional form. ![]() Oddly because the word majestic implies a stiff formality and there is nothing stiff about this. Funny and sad and moving and oddly majestic. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is only now, decades later, that the beautiful and colorful illustrations of the book can be found in other languages than Italian. With color images, the diversity of winter and snowy nature is easier to perceive than with black-and-white images alone. However, the four-color illustrations created for the Italian version of the book presents a new dimension of winter nature. Tove Jansson was a master at writing and also a talent in generating emotions through her black-and-white images by using different techniques. It is white, cold, and quiet outside and the snowy world is full of dangers and strange creatures. In this classic from 1957, Moomintroll wakes up from hibernation and finds himself in the middle of a new and mysterious season.
